As I fell out of the habit of regular diary posts the last couple of weeks, I thought it would be easier to do a wee general update, then I’ll get back to the regular format with this week’s post.
One of the reasons I’ve been a bit all over the place for the past couple of weeks is that I moved back to Sweden at the weekend!
Well, sort of.
I’m going to be working here quite a bit for the next while (more on that in a moment), and I’ve been missing my old life and friends here lots, but at the same time I love Glasgow and my life and friends there too. So after loads of thinking and juggling and brainstorming, I decided to try pulling off a having-my-cake-and-eating-it, go-where-the-wind-takes-me life in two cities!
We will see how it all works out, but it’s such a brilliant best of both worlds that it’s going to be fun giving it a go even if it does go tits up eventually 😂
It’s been funny the last couple of days readjusting to immigrant life. All those wee Swedish quirks I’d got used to over six years are surprising and confusing me all over again. Despite the fact that I did live here for six years already and speak functional (if not quite fluent!) Swedish, I’ve just this minute had lunch and I don’t have a clue what it was as I was too scared to hold up the line of hungry Swedes at the buffet by asking what everything was so just pointed blindly. It was yummy in any case 🤷♀️
As you might have gathered already, it’s been a bit of an all-over-the-place period for me work-wise — not least as I’m a terrible one for getting all excited about what I plan to do, announcing it and then realising it’s actually impossible to deliver! The problem (other than my own optimism!) is that TV work is fairly unpredictable and irregular, so I keep thinking I’m looking at several clear weeks then they all get eaten up. Now that I’m actually here and can plan regular meetings with the production companies I’m working with, I’m hopeful that I’ll get a better sense of what time I have left over to devote to books and podcasts and whatever else I dream up to keep myself out of trouble!
That said, I’m determined not to announce anything until it’s actually ready to release because if I’m annoying myself I can only imagine how you feel! So for the next few months, books and podcasts from me will just kind of appear with little to no notice and it will all be terribly mysterious and fabulous. I’m not even going to say what the next thing is, only that I’m loving it and I think you’ll be happy too…
Also as you might have noticed, I’ve been doing a bit of trying out new ideas and genres and all sorts. What I’ve decided to do is launch a little “scratch pad” area here on my website. I’ll post beginnings and extracts and bits and pieces of new stuff from time to time, and you can let me know if you’d like to read more in the comments.
In the meantime, I’m off to walk along the Baltic Sea to my next meeting and really hope I didn’t just have horse for my lunch.
