Cracked the story of the script I’m writing for Top Secret Project. I’m going to have to come up with better code names than that because I’m working on three Top Secret Projects at the moment (not exactly state secrets, just not at announce-able stages yet!) and it’ll get annoying. Will have a think. Have had this story in my head for almost a decade, so it was weird and wonderful and thrilling seeing it finally start to take proper shape. It’s not good yet, but it’s got the foundations of good and at this stage that’s pretty good 🙂
Continued wrestling script into submission. At one point thought it was going to be about three hours long (it’s a TV episode), then realised one of the storylines is for a later episode. This draft will still be over long, but that’s better than a first draft coming up short. Celebrated with Prosecco and friends in the evening.
Aerial yoga this morning then spent some time working on my new book. It can be scary when time is tight, but I always find a day off from a given project at strategic stages is crucial to let the good stuff percolate at the back of my brain. So many times I’ve tried to power through in the interests of a deadline then always regretted it when I hit a wall and ended up with a wasted day anyway.
Feeling guilty about the Hollywoodland podcast! When I uploaded the series intro weeks ago, launching on Friday 22 November was perfectly realistic (honest!) but then movement on Top Secret Projects 1 and 3 meant that it just wasn’t possible. Will continue to work on it when I can grab some time and will release whenever it’s ready.
After two years as a full time indie author it’s strange for me not to have total control over my schedule any more (not that I always kept to the one I set myself, but at least I could legitimately set one!). There’s always a bit of chaos as a freelancer/own business owner as priorities and finances and opportunities shift and shake, so being flexible is nothing new. Events of last few months, however, have propelled me into a whole new level or world or other gaming metaphor I can’t use properly as I haven’t played a video game since Super Mario Brothers in about 1993, and 2020 lies before me a fizzing mass of potential and uncertainty.
By this time next year — or even in just a few months — everything I’ve worked for for nearly 20 years could be starting to happen, or I could be dusting myself off and cracking on with a new idea. And it’s largely out of my hands. It’s bonkers.
Met with an agent this evening about future possibilities for some of my books, so watch this space!
Got back into Top Secret Project today, though was distracted by an almost dead car and a bit of faff to find a charger in my area that was available and working! Generally speaking I love being an electric car owner, the cost savings alone more than make up for the minor inconvenience of having to keep on top of charging, but on the odd occasion the timing could be better! Christmas night out with my book club got my spirits back up – until I saw the election results anyway 😩
Today will be all about polishing the script treatment so that I’m ready to dive into the full draft first thing on Monday (right on schedule!), plus preparing for running a stall at Glasgow’s Secret Markets at the Tramway tomorrow (come along and say hi if you’re nearby!) and Christmas drinks with a friend this evening. Hoping to squeeze in a tiny bit of work on the new book – it’s going to be a doozy!
Only managed one yoga class this week, but other than that a pretty solid week 😎
